HeroDevs Reaffirms Commitment: Open Source Pledge for 2026 with $1.7M+ in Support

For the third year running, HeroDevs is proud to reaffirm our commitment to the Open Source Pledge. The Pledge asks member companies to pay open source maintainers and foundations directly every year, and to publish what they give. For 2026, we're putting $1,738,729 back into open source sustainability.

Open source is the foundation of everything we do. Our Never-Ending Support (NES) business exists because organizations depend on open source long after a project reaches end of life. Giving back to the maintainers, ecosystems, and foundations that make that software possible isn't a side project for us. It's part of how we work.

Our 2026 Open Source Pledge by the Numbers

Here's how much HeroDevs pledged to open source for 2026:

  • 37 full-time developers on staff
  • $1,738,729 paid toward open source sustainability
  • $46,992 reinvested per developer

That's nearly $47,000 per developer flowing directly back into the projects and maintainers our customers rely on.

Where Our Open Source Funding Goes

Our 2026 contributions span three main areas:

  • Investments in ecosystems: over $1.2M. Direct investment in the open source ecosystems our customers depend on, from critical runtimes and frameworks to the maintainers of smaller, high-impact libraries.
  • Open Source Sustainability Fund: $102,000. Funding paid out through the $20M Open Source Sustainability Fund we launched in 2025 to support maintainers of end-of-life open source projects.
  • Foundation support: $99,000. Continued backing for the foundations that steward shared infrastructure, governance, and security across the open source world.

Why Open Source Sustainability Matters

The open source sustainability gap hasn't gone away. Many widely used projects are maintained by a handful of volunteers. Security patches often depend on someone's nights and weekends. And organizations running end-of-life stacks carry real risk when no one is left to fix what breaks.

We see that gap every day through our Never-Ending Support work. Funding maintainers and ecosystems directly is how we help keep critical software healthy, secure, and supported for the long haul.

How You Can Support Open Source

If your organization depends on open source (and it almost certainly does), we encourage you to:

  • Take the Pledge. Make a public commitment to fund open source at opensourcepledge.com.
  • Sponsor the projects you rely on. Start with the dependencies your products can't run without.
  • Publish your own report. Transparency makes it easier for others to follow.
  • Contribute. Code, docs, bug reports, and small fixes all add up.

Open source gives all of us a head start. Let's make sure it's around for the next generation of builders.
